FAQ

Things people often ask about
the job

What are the hours?

Our working hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 5:00pm. You’ll notice that our customer hours are different. As a customer-facing department, it is important that our team have time at the beginning and end of each day to set ourselves up for success. It is during this time that time we handle administrative and non-customer facing tasks.

What benefits are offered?

Full-time employees are offered multiple County benefits including paid leave, sick leave, and health insurance. As a member of our team, you’ll also have an opportunity for constant training, personal growth, and professional advancement. Our team doesn’t work here because they love taxes or Beaufort County. They work to take care of who and what they love at home. They choose to work here because we’re more than just a job. We’re a team who helps each other grow and succeed.

Is the job stressful?

Yes, (sorry, we can’t sugar-coat it). It probably doesn’t shock you to know that collecting taxes isn’t always a popular or liked service. This can mean disgruntled customers, challenging dynamics, or unpleasant tasks to execute. Much of our work is required by State law, what makes us different is how we do our work. We choose to do more than check off a task but perform them with ownership, purpose, and passion. This makes a challenging job fun, rewarding, and collaborative. You will experience the pride of growing in confidence and knowledge while constantly working towards new goals and initiatives.

Do you allow remote work?

We believe that serving with passion isn’t dictated by where it is performed. Eight years ago, we were the first department in the County to allow remote work. It is permitted on a case-by-case basis. As a customer-facing department, there will always be certain tasks and roles that require a physical office presence. How we decide if you can work remotely is based on your role, assigned tasks, and performance.

What will training be like?

Every role in our office has, at a minimum, a three-month training and on-boarding plan and every task has a procedure. On your first day, you’ll be assigned a trainer who will be by your side through the entirety of your training. In addition to your on-boarding, you will receive ongoing training every week in your team meeting, every month in our staff meeting, and annually at our annual training day. Empowered with knowledge, you’ll be prepared to own everything about your role.

Are there opportunities for advancement?

Absolutely. We’re big on succession planning (it’s not a coincidence that success is in succession!). The best people are our people…86% of all non-entry level positions have been filled with internal promotions. Here is the more important question to ask yourself: What does advancement mean to you? What it means to us is that we are constantly pushing ourselves to evolve with purpose. This might mean learning a new skill, supporting a project outside of our role, or taking on leadership assignments. All of these things and more advance you as a professional and get you ready to answer the door when opportunity knocks.
