Redemption Deadline Coming Up

If your property was auctioned at the 2022 Delinquent Tax Auction, the final deadline is approaching to redeem your property. Delinquent property owners whose property was sold at the 2022 Tax Sale have until 5:00 pm on Thursday, October 5, 2023 to redeem their property.

Redeeming property is when the delinquent property owner, or other party with interest in the property, pays the back taxes and interest in order to maintain ownership of their property. Redemption payments are accepted in-person or by postal mail and must be made in guaranteed funds, which include cash, cashier’s check, money order, and credit or debit card.

For our customers going through this process, it can be a difficult time. My team and I are here to ease that burden and be as informative as possible so our customers can make the best decision for themselves and their property.
— Maria Walls, CPA - Beaufort County Treasurer

A list of properties waiting to be redeemed is available here as well as an interactive map.

The Treasurer’s Office will be open from 8:30am to 5:00pm on Thursday, October 5, 2023, in both the Beaufort and Bluffton offices to assist customers wishing to pay their property taxes in-person ahead of the deadline.

If a delinquent property owner does not redeem their property, they are strongly encouraged to contact the Treasurer’s Office. There may be overage funds to which they are entitled. An overage exists when the winning bid amount for a property sold at tax sale exceeds the minimum bid.  Whoever owns the property on the last day of the redemption period is entitled to receive any available overage funds.

Our team wants to emphasize that we are here to assist and support our customers going through this process. There are “money finding” companies who attempt to contact delinquent property owners, claiming they have found them money or even try to purchase their delinquent property before the end of the redemption period. This can be to the detriment of the property owner, costing them finders fees or even loss of property.
